Election and referendum

On 20 October 2024, Moldova held a vote for president and a referendum on EU integration. The purpose of the referendum was to decide whether to enshrine EU integration into the constitution. For such a constitutional change to happen, a simple majority needed to vote in favor of the change at the referendum.

Results and next steps

• Voter turnout on the day was of 1.56 million, which is nearly 52% of eligible voters.
• Referendum – 50.4% in favor of modifying the constitution to include Moldova’s accession to the European Union.
• Presidential elections – the current incumbent, Maia Sandu, has come on top with over 42.5% of the vote. The runner up, Alexandr Stoianoglo, received 26.0% of the vote. Presidential voting will go into the second round.
• Second round of presidential elections will be held on 3 November, contested between the two candidates with the most votes.
