Investing in international equities now available for maibank users
Investor relations release 16 October 2026
Maibank introduces investing for premium clients, with access to US shares and ETFs in the app
Maib announces that its market-leading mobile banking application, maibank, now offers investment services. Initially available to premium clients of alto and Private Banking, the service lets them buy and sell shares and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) listed on the US market directly in the app, including in fractional amounts, funded from their maib accounts. The service is launched after consultations with the National Commission for Financial Markets (CNPF) and the National Bank of Moldova (NBM).
Deepening engagement with the most valuable clients
The launch is aimed at maib's most valuable audience: affluent, digitally active clients with higher balances and a broader need for financial services. Investing gives these clients a recurring reason to open maibank, which raises the app's relevance and engagement, and with it the number of maib products held per client. Until now, investing was a gap in the offering, and clients who wanted it often turned to foreign applications. By offering it in maibank, maib aims to keep more of these clients' primary financial relationship with the bank.
Fully digital service in collaboration with well known SEC-regulated investment platform
The fully-digital service is also exclusive on the Moldovan market and is expected to attract new premium clients from other banks. Maib’s partner is a well-known and widely used investment platform provider regulated by the US Securities and Exchange Commissions. Client’s funds are fully segregated and held in custody. The service is provided on execution only basis without the investment advice. Rollout starts with alto and Private Banking clients with wider availability possible in the future. The service is not expected to have a material impact on maib's 2026 financial results.
A retail business with strong momentum
The launch builds on a fast-growing retail business unit, whose loan portfolio recently reached MDL 20 billion. Maibank is the main driver of this growth. It reached 1,007 thousand users as of 30 June 2026, up from 938 thousand at year-end 2025 and 297 thousand at year-end 2020. The share of monthly active users who also engage daily reached 38.5% in 2026, and the app is rated 4.8 on Google Play and 4.5 on the App Store. Maib's customer base grew 31% between 2020 and 2025, to 1,142 thousand, while the branch network was reduced by 17%. In the first half of 2026 the bank delivered 19 app releases, and customers can already use the full product suite without visiting a branch.
Aliona Stratan, First Vice President in charge of retail banking at maib, said:
"Our most valuable customers expect their bank to be where they manage everything, including their investments. With maibank, they no longer need a foreign application to invest, and the decisions stay clearly with the customer. This is the first step, and it makes maibank more relevant to the customers who matter most to us. Warm thank you to the team that worked on the launch of this exciting new product"
