Pioneering 60 MWh energy storage project financed by maib
Maib financed the construction of a 60 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Rădeni, Strășeni district, built by maib’s long-term customer GS Blue Electric. It is one of the most significant energy storage investments in Moldova to date. The official opening ceremony took place on 30 April 2026. The facility, co-located with the existing 50 MW Radeni Solar Park, is the largest grid-scale storage asset in the Republic of Moldova and one of the largest in the region. The project will provide critical balancing services to the national grid operator, Moldelectrica, and substantially increase the share of solar energy that can be reliably integrated into the Moldovan power system. The project reinforces maib's position as Moldova's leading green lender and demonstrates the Bank's commitment to financing infrastructure that strengthens the country's energy security and accelerates its transition to renewable energy.
Strategic investment in the country’s future
The Radeni BESS is paired with the adjacent Radeni Solar Park, GS Blue Electric will be able to shift midday solar generation into the evening demand peak, replacing the imported electricity or fossil generation. Preliminary estimates forecast that the project will displace approximately 7,000-9,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year and reduce Moldova's net electricity import dependency by an estimated 0,6-0,7 percent. As Moldova scales its renewable capacity toward 30% of consumption by 2030, storage infrastructure is becoming an essential national priority.
Moldova's battery storage capacity: building energy resilience
Moldova has undergone a remarkable energy transformation in recent years, driven by the urgent need to reduce dependence on external energy sources. Renewable energy capacity has expanded rapidly, reaching over 1 GW by early 2026 — a twelvefold increase over five years. However, the rapid growth of variable renewable generation has made energy storage systems increasingly critical for grid stability.
The Ministry of Energy has set an ambitious roadmap: Moldova's second renewable energy tender, launched in late 2025 with bids submitted by March 2026, focuses on the construction of wind farms with a combined capacity of 170 MW. A key feature of this tender is the mandatory BESS component, requiring at least 0.25 MWh of storage for every 1 MW of installed wind power. The country plans to scale total battery storage capacity significantly to support grid flexibility, reduce import dependency and enable the integration of locally produced renewable electricity. Consumption peaks in Moldova can reach up to 1,000 MW per hour, making storage infrastructure an essential national priority.

Green and sustainable finance: maib's MDL 1.3 billion portfolio
Sustainable finance is a key component of maib's long-term strategy. By the end of 2025, the Bank's total outstanding portfolio of green and sustainable loans exceeded MDL 1.3 billion The BESS project in Rădeni is one of the first utility-scale battery energy storage systems and was financed by the Corporate business unit of maib, further broadening the Bank's funding capability.
Valerian Stratan, GS Blue Electric, said:
Maib has provided long-term support to our group of companies. Partnering with maib allowed us to turn ambitious projects into reality. The Rădeni storage facility demonstrates that large-scale energy storage is commercially viable in Moldova, and we hope it will inspire further investment in the infrastructure our country needs to become energy independent.
Alexandru Sonic, maib VP, head of Corporate business unit, stated:
Moldova's transition to a clean, secure, and affordable energy system depends on the rapid deployment of flexibility assets. The Radeni BESS is a landmark project — not only because of its scale, but because it demonstrates that bankable, privately-operated storage is now a reality in our region. Maib is committed to supporting the infrastructure that makes this transition sustainable — not only for our customers, but for the country as a whole. We are proud to have financed one of the most significant combined energy generation and storage investments Moldova has seen to date.
