Maib teams up with EBRD to launch residential energy efficiency loans under GEFF Moldova programme

Investor Relations Release, 16 October 2025

Maib is pleased to announce the signing of a new agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) under the Residential Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF), aimed at boosting energy efficiency investments in Moldovan homes.

Under the agreement, maib will channel up to €15 million as part of the EBRD’s €40 million national GEFF programme designed to help households, housing associations and developers invest in sustainable technologies. Eligible projects include thermal insulation, efficient windows and doors, smart heating and cooling systems, domestic solar installations, and other high-performance green technologies.

“We are grateful for EBRD's support in bringing the new Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) in Moldova. This funding will help Moldovan businesses, housing associations and families save on utility bills by investing in energy-efficient technologies for home, such as insulation, energy efficient domestic appliances, smart heating and other. It will also go a long way in promoting the benefits for carbon footprint reducing investments including the long-term energy savings. By simplifying access to green finance, maib supports Moldovan businesses and households in reducing energy costs and emissions, while advancing our shared goal of a sustainable and modern economy aligned with European standards.” — says Giorgi Shagidze, CEO of maib.

Maib green lending

The new facility strengthens maib’s position as Moldova’s leading sustainable lender and builds on its expanding green portfolio. Maib already finances renewable energy, energy-efficient equipment, and green transport for SMEs and corporates under its dedicated green taxonomy. At the end of Q2 2025 maib’s green portfolio exceeded MDL 1.3 billion. Maib financed major renewable energy projects, including a 50 MW solar plant in Radeni launched earlier in 2025.

Long-standing partnership with EBRD

This partnership marks another milestone in maib’s strategic cooperation with EBRD and reinforces the bank’s commitment to supporting Moldova’s transition to a modern, low-carbon economy. Disbursements under the new programme are expected to begin in 2026. Lending under Residential GEFF programme is one of many fruitful projects between maib and EBRD. Earlier in October maib and EBRD signed two agreements including a risk sharing agreement and EU4Business supported loan to fund SMEs in Moldova.
